Comments:	Love your site! I lived in Syosset from about 1942 to 1946, on the corner of Jackson Ave. and Convent Rd. I have many pictures from those days. Let me know if you would like some. I remember the German war prisoners working the farms. I remember the parties in the fire department building and I learned to dance the Poliish hop from my girlfriend's dad. I remember during the war when we Hicksville high school children helped pick the crops because the young men were away fighting the war! I remember so many fun things from those days!! -- Going to the post office to pick up the mail after the mail train came in -- the horse and buggy picking up guests from the railroad station when the Powers had company. Mrs. Stiiler's florist shop where I worked!! I have two signed copies of Mr. Stiiler's songs. So many memories!!!

My part time job following retirement is at a Borders store here in Frederick, MD. I was able to order and quickly receive three copies of your book. One I kept, one I gave to my mother who is 94 and living in a nursing home. She got many hours of enjoyment revisiting our former home town through your efforts. I have lived in Frederick, MD for the past thirty years, but will always consider Syosset "My Home Town". Thanks for the memories.

Comments:	Syosset HS class of '61- moved to Woodbury in the middle of my junior year. My senior year was my best year in school! Soccer, manager of basketball team, senior play, senior trip, Brancato's, etc, etc Went to St Lawrence University way upstate - majored in philosophy. Went to work for NYL in 1968 and retired from there 12/31/2004 - Currently work for MetLife Married then divorced. Lived in NYC as a single for several years. Re-married in 1981. Lived in NYC, Spring Valley, Toronto, Ridgewood, NJ and since 1993 Leawood, KS. Married for past 28 yrs. Thank you for a great scrapbook - great memories. Monty

Comments:	I moved from Astoria, Queens to Syosset in 1952. It was a terrifying experience. We were the first people living in "Ranch Village", off Cold Spring Road next to the firehouse. There were only potato fields and a couple of other houses ~ where was everything and everybody?! As I grew up, I found I loved Syosset and everything it represented, and I miss it still. The village was a magical place, and everyone knew everybody. My best friend, Linda Stiles, and I were always on the go and soon found Galiza Stables where we spent many years with our ponies, then horses. Our life was full of adventure and fun. It was a safe, wonderful hang out and we always found something exciting to do. I went to just about every school, because they kept building more for all the new people moving there. I often wish I could back to those special days and that great place. I moved away several times, but always came back, until I moved to Huntington in '92. I finally moved to Brunswick, GA in 1999, but not by choice. Even though it has grown extensively, it is still a great place in my mind.

Comments:	Our family moved to Syosset (actually Birchwood Park in Jericho) in 1957, where I started 1st grade at Robbins Lane School. The homes and school in our area were new and without the traditions and history that your website shows. We filled our time with play as children, and with more serious pursuits as we emerged into the 60s ... developing our talents, building friendships, looking for our place in the larger world. It's been a great experience to traverse the pages of this scrapbook to both see Syosset in a grander historical perspective and to reminisce. One stunning memory that got revived was Mrs. Babcock. I remember her as a tall, slender, slightly eccentric woman who visited our school (and now I don't remember if it was Robbins Lane, or Southwoods, or even Syosset High). She had a distinctive presence to me, perhaps because our teacher had prepped us. I remember thinking how odd and unusual the very wealthy are! I do not recall what she brought to her visit. I am suddenly struck with curiosity about her... I was aware of the estates in our North Shore enclave and surroundings, because I used to bicycle, starting at Robbins Lane, up into Muttontown off Jericho Turnpike, and then on and on for hours, North and East. Stately homes and grounds that were of another impenetrable world--of what? Business? The arts? International statesmanship? Civic responsibility? Madness? I did not understand. It was not unusual for me to arrive at Cold Spring Harbor or one of the beaches with my artist's pad and some pencils or water colors in tow. To study the whaler's windows high atop the homes and imagine the women and children searching the sea for their family men returning from their voyage. The Planting Fields, the King Zog estate, Lollipop Farm, The Fish Hatcheries, Sunken Orchard... were all names of places that were part of my landscape. The amazing thing about reflection is it enhances one's love of life, to realize our connection to a time and place. Thank you.

Comments:	Moved to Syosset in 1956, age 10 from Queens. My parents bought a house at 16 Loretta Drive and I initially attended Alice P. Willits elementary school. I graduated from Syosset HS in 1964, and joined the service after two rather dismal years in college in 1966. I had a great military career. I graduated from military flight school in 1967, went to war four times; Vietnam twice, Panama and finally Desert Storm. Retired as a Colonel in 1994 and became a Chief Pilot for a corporation in York, PA. I retired again in 2009 and now have the time to do all the things I missed while traveling all over the world at the beck and call of the government and past employers. My sister, Joanne also graduated from Syosset, class of 1967. She now lives in FL. I found the website by accident and was enthralled by it. I spent an hour on it today at the expense of working outside!! I loved it. I included on my favorites list and will view it often!! Thanks for the memories!!

Comments:	I grew up on Pine Road and am the youngest of 6 children, Neal, Randy, Bradley , Mitchell and Siri. I graduated SHS in 1978, and after a divorce , I raised my 2 children right here in Syosset. My daughter is 21 and my son is going into his senior year at SHS. The story regarding the Candela Award really hit home. My father, Lester Smith was a founder of SBL, and coached my 4 brothers throughout the years. His name was on one of the missing plaques when the Library moved. My father passed away in 1995, and my mother has since painstakingly tried to get the plaque hung at the current Library to no avail. My dad worked so hard and put his heart and soul into creating a safe and fun place for boys to get involved with the right things, and his legacy is falling by the wayside due to people not willing to go that extra mile to locate the plaques, like my father went the extra mile to help the boys of Syosset. My mom will be 85 in September and to see Lester’s name up where it belongs would mean everything to her and our whole family.

AND OUR PURPOSE WAS TO ORGANIZE SYOSSET ATHLETIC PROGRAMS - OUTSIDE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT PROGRAMS - UNDER ONE ROOF, WITH ONLY ONE EXCLUSION AND THAT WAS SPARTAN FOOTBALL, WHO PREFERRED TO BE ON THEIR OWN. OUR ORIGINAL PROGRAMS INCLUDED NORTH AND SOUTH LITTLE LEAGUE, BABE RUTH, SYOSSET BASKETBALL LEAGUE (SBL) AND FOR A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME, STAN MUSIAL LEAGUE. WE INITIATED THE GIRL'S SOFTBALL LEAGUE, THE BOY'S SOFTBALL LEAGUE AND THE FIRST SUMMER SOCCER PROGRAM IN SYOSSET. WE, JERRY KASS (AT THE COMMUNITY PARK THERE IS A FIELD NAMED FOR JERRY) AND I STARTED THIS PROGRAM FOR OUR SONS AS WELL AS SOME OF THE MEN FROM, I BELIEVE, THE FIRE DEPARTMENT. ALL OF THESE "KIDS" WANTED TO CONTINUE PLAYING EVEN AFTER HIGH SCHOOL DAYS AND WE WORKED TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE. WE, JUNE VILLAZON AND I, STARTED GIRL'S SOFTBALL BY RECRUITING PLAYERS FROM THOMPSON AND SOUTH WOODS BY SIGNING UP GIRLS AT THE SCHOOLS BY SITTING OUTSIDE WHERE THE BUSES PICKED UP STUDENTS. WHY WAS THIS PROGRAM STARTED? OUR GIRLS THOUGHT THAT IT WAS NOT FAIR, THAT ONLY BOYS COULD PLAY SOFTBALL. SO JUNE AND I, ASSISTED BY JOHN PARNON, MADE THIS POSSIBLE. OUR SYAC SUMMER SOCCER PROGRAM BEGAN WITH THE AID OF A THOMPSON SOCCER TEACHER AND COACH -LEROY FRANCK. A SYOSSET RESIDENT AND GRADUATE OF SYOSSET HIGH SCHOOL, GORDON BARR, RAN THIS SUMMER PROGRAM FOR US. THIS WAS OUR PROGRAM THAT WAS COACHED ONLY BY HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES AND THEN SENIORS OF SYOSSET HIGH SCHOOL - NO PARENTS WERE ASKED TO MANAGE OR COACH. SYAC SOCCER WAS A PROGRAM FOR BOYS ONLY. IT WAS AT A MUCH LATER DATE, THAT SYOSSET SOCCER TOOK OVER THE PROGRAM OF SYOSSET SOCCER FOR THE BENEFIT OF BOTH GIRLS AND BOYS. THROUGH SYOSSET YOUTH ATHLETIC COUNCIL, S.C.A.N WAS BORN. AT THAT TIME, S.C.A.N. WAS KNOWN AS SYOSSET COMMITTE AGAINST NARCOTICS. IT WAS LATER CHANGED TO SYOSSET COMMITTEE ABOUT NARCOTICS. MANY CHANGES HAVE TAKEN PLACE SINCE THAT TIME WITH SCAN. WE WORKED CLOSELY AND WELL WITH THE TOWN OF OYSTER BAY AND THE SYOSSET SCHOOL SYSTEM, ORGANIZING THE USE OF ALL OF OUR BALL FIELDS FOR THE BENEFIT OF ALL THE RESIDENTS. YEARLY AWARDS WERE PRESENTED TO THOSE VOLUNTEERS WHO GAVE THE GREATEST ASSISTANCE TO MAKING ATHLETIC PROGRAMS AVAILABLE TO THE CHILDREN OF THE SYOSSET-WOODBURY AREA. ORIGINALLY, THERE WAS A BRONZE PLAQUE ON THE OUTSIDE WALL OF THE OLD SYOSSET LIBRARY ON JACKSON AVENUE. THIS WAS CALLED THE "CANDELA" AWARD, NAMED IN MEMORY OF MICHAEL CANDELA. AT A LATER DATE, AN ADDITIONAL AWARD CALLED THE "JERRY KASS" AWARD WAS ADDED, AS WAS ANOTHER BRONZE PLAQUE. WHEN THE LIBRARY MOVED TO SOUTH OYSTER BAY ROAD AND THE L.I.E., THE PLAQUES WERE PLACED INSIDE OF THE LIBRARY. FOR WHATEVER THE REASON, THE LIBRARY BOARDS DECIDED TO REMOVE THESE TWO PLAQUES, NEVER TO BE SEEN ANYMORE BY THOSE OF US THAT WORKED SO HARD AND FOR SO MANY YEARS TO MAKE ALL OF THESE ATHLETIC PROGRAMS POSSIBLE TO EACH AND EVERY RESIDENT AND THEIR FAMILIES. THE LAST I HEARD, THESE PLAQUES ARE IN "SOMEONES" BASEMENT. REPEATED REQUESTS BY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY TO THE LIBRARY BOARD TO RETURN THESE PLAQUES TO THE WALLS OF OUR SYOSSET LIBRARY, HAVE MET WITH NEGATIVE RETURNS. WHERE DO THE MEMBERS OF THE LIBRARY BOARD FEEL THESE COMMUNITY PLAQUES BELONG? WE HAVE NO COMMUNITY BUILDING THAT SERVES THE SYOSSET-WOODBURY AREA BETTER THAN OUR LIBRARY AND THE LIBRARY IS SUPPORTED BY EACH OF ITS RESIDENTS. THAT IS A PRETTY SAD COMMENTARY THAT THE LIBRARY BOARD REFUSES TO MOUNT THESE PLAQUES IN HONOR OF THE HARD-WORKING RESIDENTS OF THEIR TOWN. GUESS I SAID ENOUGH FOR NOW. SINCERELY, SYDELL HERRICK MORE MEMORIES P. S. 29 YEARS AGO, ON FATHER'S DAY, OUR SON, SCOTT WAS HIT AT 93 MPH BY A D.W.I. DRIVER ON WOODBURY ROAD IN FRONT OF GEICO. AT THAT TIME, THE D.W.I. DRIVER RECEIVED A SIX MONTH'S REVOCATION OF HIS LICENSE AND A $250 FINE. HAPPY ENDING - ALTHOUGH SCOTT WAS IN THE HOSPITAL FOR 13 WEEKS, TODAY, HE IS IN GOOD SHAPE, LIVING IN MARYLAND WITH HIS TWO CHILDREN.

Comments:	I'm not from N.Y. but from Washington state. The love of my life grew up on Robert Circle in Syosset until he left the area in the early 70's for Berkeley, CA. (He graduated from Berkeley H.S. in 1971). We discovered this site about 6 months ago and I have to say it was very strange being a Seattle girl and still recognizing about 95% of the places on this site even though I've never been to the east coast. He'd told me so many wonderful stories about growing up in Syosset - so many details - it was fascinating. It still is. I'm so glad we found it when we did - it brought back so many good memories for him. He loved growing up there. My love's name is Keith Stackhouse...he passed away in his sleep in Des Moines, WA on June 1, 2009. The cause is still to be determined by the M.E.

Comments:	Wow, what a lot of familiar names, places and memories. I want to identify “unidentified” in the photo on Hofgren’s Hill in part 1—me. I’m Mike Hofgren’s little sister Krissy, who tagged after her three big brothers everywhere possible. What a miserable hand-me-down that jacket was—so short in the waist the snow needed to be extracted after each sled ride. Remember that great bump in the middle of the hill that made you go airborne? And the upper short hill with the dog-leg turn? Among playmates was Priscilla’s brother Christy, before he switched from Village School.

Comments:	I lived in Syosset briefly as a child, from 1967-1969. My family lived on the estate of Captain & Mrs. Hammond—my father was the caretaker there during their final years. I remember the endless hours I had spent exploring the woods and fields, visiting the ancient cemetery, and helping my father build a boat in the barn with Steve Hammond, the older Hammonds’ son.

Comments:	Graduated Class of '75 and attended Boston University School of Fine Arts. Anyone who remembers me knows that I play the violin. I still play (a little, I have some arm and neck issues) and teach violin and piano. My entire family have left Long Island - we lived on Colgate Lane for a while and then in some condo complex that I can't remember the name of. Have great memories of going to the Harrugate Music Festival in Wales with the chorus, hanging out at the ice skating rink with the "skate guards" and of course, the Syosset-Woodbury Community Park - the pool especially. Haven't in touch with too many since high school until I signed up on Facebook a couple of weeks ago. Would LOVE to hear from some! Especially graduates of 74 and 75. Thanx so much for doing this site. By the way, there are quite a few Syosset graduates in the Boston area - especially Newton which is where I live. About 10 years ago, a group of my friends joined at a mutual friend's house to chaperone the kids at Halloween. We split up into small groups - I wound up with two other woman and a bunch of kids. As we were chatting, I asked the other two woman where they grew up. Both said they graduated from Syosset High - the 3 of us were astounded! It's a small, small world!

Comments:	John, You and Pam have done an outstanding job of assembling this wonderful collection of pictures and memorabilia regarding historic Syosset. I was saddened to learn of Pam’s passing, she and I (and you) were neighbors and friends in North Syosset. As far as bio info goes: I was born in Huntington Hospital and raised at 2 Monfort Place, right behind the Split Rock School. (Not a good set of geographical circumstances considering the “gregarious, out going personality” of my formative days. Over the years Frank Manerell , Wilson Gearhardt and I became very close. I attended Split Rock School until the 6th grade and then we all entered the new, partially completed Syosset High School. I graduated in 1961 after experiencing 6 of the best years one could imagine. (Sock Hops, The Pajama Game, class trip to Washington DC, Teenage Club, Sal’s Candy Store, Tobay Beach, to mention only a few. And of course, the Fabulous Furys….if anyone remembers…) After graduation from Syosset in 1961, I attended the University of Pennsylvania at California Pa. and was certified in education K-8th grades. I spent the next 35 years working in the Commack Public Schools in various positions. Soon after college I married Judith Cooper (Judy Orobona) and we have a son Michael, aged 38. Together, Judy and I lived in East Northport for 38 years until recently moving to Valley City, Ohio. John, if you have any plans for an up-date of your collection of pictures please contact me because I have a pile of old pictures featuring a number of the locals from the Split Rock era and area. Again, a job well done and all the best of luck with your book.

Comments:	In 1975 my parents bought a ranch house on Cold Spring Road for the "bicentennial promotional" price of $76,000. The house has since been torn down but it was a great location for kids, with woods in the back and a nice long driveway for skidding out with the Big Wheel. We were diagonally across the road from the farm on the corner of South Woods Rd and Cold Spring Rd (Horan Farm?), and in the morning we would hear the booming cannon used to scare crows away from the corn. On a quiet weekend afternoon, one could even hear high school football games. A little further down Cold Spring Rd was Stillwell Rd and the horse farms. My early elementary school years were spent in Mineola, but in fourth grade I returned to Syosset and went to Berry Hill Elementary, right before the scandalous closing of Split Rock and its students' integration into our school (also into Village Elementary if memory serves). Went on to South Woods Junior High/Middle School and the High School. In 1987 we moved around the corner to Morris Court (off Cherry Lane). Though my years in Syosset weren't the happiest, I do have fond memories of: sledding behind Berry Hill, "pizza day" at school featuring Christiano's, the dollar bills stuck to Christiano's ceiling and the photo of Billy Joel behind the bar, working at C-Town in high school, buying school supplies at Scott's 5 & 10, the lonnnnng perilous walk into town along sidewalk-free Cold Spring Road, and discovering the hidden nooks and crannies of SHS (back in the days of open campus - graduated in 1991). Thank you for the photos of the "Syosset" movie theater (the Syosset Triplex to me). My husband grew up in Huntington Station and insists there was no such thing. Two questions: * does anyone know the name of the farm by the Maine Maid Inn? We used to go there to pet/feed the goats and horses. * when did the great rivalry with Hicksville start? My Mom lives there, and my brother got in more than his share of scraps when he wore his Syosset jacket (of course, this may have just been Joe - he had a standing chess match with Mr. Tomashevsky at Berry Hill since he spent so much time in his office!).

Comments:	Hi Larry Hirschberger here, now living in Ithaca, New York, where I've been since 1978. I was born at 84 Kathleen Drive in 1955, went to A.P. Willits, Thompson and Syosset HS. I have an older sister and brother, Virginia ("Ginny") and George, and a younger brother Steve. I have fond memories of growing up in Syosset, I thought it was a great place to be, it's smallish size, the beaches close enough to hitch to, the city nearby. I remember playing/partying in Spark's woods, hanging out at the Sheedy's house on Berry Hill Road, walking out of HB Thompson to protest the bombing of Cambodia, going into the city to the Fillmore for shows. It was a time when everything was changing fast and it somehow seemed safe anyway (blessings to all those that didn't make it through). My thanks to Syosset High School to let us do what we needed to without making it into a prison, they did a great job! I could go on.... I live in another great town now, so come visit Ithaca. Comments:	Hello John, you have a fantastic site with many interesting memories of Syosset. I am a Greek Orphan who lived in Syosset from 1958 and went to South Grove Elementary School and Split Rock School. In part 5, I noticed a 6th Grade School picture with a Mr. Parkes as the teacher from the year 1965--all you compatriots from that year, do you remember your classmates?--and while looking at it, I saw my photo. My name then was, Billy Schwarz (since changed) and my adopted parents were, Charles and Catherine Schwarz from Muttontown/Syosset. I also recognize a familiar name of Mark Steffens in the same photo and wonder if he or any one that may know his whereabouts can email me. I am presently overseas. Your website brought back many tearful memories of Syosset, some sad but mostly happy times; the sad part is that I never dreamed I would ever get this old! But all our lives are as a vapour; here today and gone somewhere else tomorrow! Comments:	What a great site. I've learned more about the town I grew up in in a few hours than in the entire18 years I lived there. The most exciting thing that I learned was that the house I grew up in was a part of summers field. syossetscrapbook.freeservers.com/SYOSSETBALLCLUB.JPG. The house in the background of that photo was my next door neighbor's house, placing the team in the foreground squarely in my backyard. It's nothing short of mindblowing to see something like that after so many years, and having never known what was there all along. I attended Berry Hill in the early to mid 80s, then south woods junior high (during the transition from "junior high" to "middle school") then SHS, ultimately graduating in 1991. I lived on North street near Church street from my birth in 1973 until 1983, then on Rodeo drive from 1983 to 1991. Any idea what Rodeo drive was before it was developed? Also, I'd be interested in getting in touch with Tom Montalbano. If I'm not mistaken he was one of my teachers in high school, and I'm certain Louise Montalbano was one of my teachers in High School as well. My memory is failing as to what subjects they taught and I'm interested in refreshing my memory. Thanks again for the amazing insight into Syosset! Great job! PS: Oh I almost forgot to mention my favorite photo from your site. The Seth + Pete graffiti photo blew my mind when I saw it on your site. How many times I must have stared at it as a child, wondering how they burned themselves! Just kidding. I have vague recollections of "burnt" being a derogatory playground slur but the usage escapes me in my early middle age. I think it was pretty localized, I haven't heard anyone use it since I was little anywhere else..

Comments:	My brother told me about your site and I spent some time reading the comments and looking at pictures from so long ago. I lived on Berry Hill Road with my parents, brother and sister. I attended Split Rock elementary....and to this day some of my fondest memories come from the years spent at that school with my classmates. Went on to Southwoods, a scary place having come from the embrace of Split Rock, then to Syosset High School graduating in 1965. I presently live with my family, daughter and wife, in Impruneta, Italy( A few kilometers south of Florence). Comments:	I enjoyed viewing your site from both a personal and historic stand point. My family lived in Syosset from about 1969 to 75. My brother, sister and I all attended school at Split Rock ES. I have great memories of attending Ray Evan's 6th grade class, riding my schwinn bike on the school grounds, and swimming in the pond down the street. 6th Grade was one of my best years in public school ever!!! In the 1970s, Syosset was very similar to some of today's small upstate towns. We lived on Burtis La. in the late August Belmont home. My Dad had this place - which was almost in ruin, restored. I regret I didn't stay in touch with many of my 6th grade classmates, whom I still think of to this day. However, I left under painful circumstances and could not connect. I am now married and proud of my happy and healthy 11 year old boy. We live in the Hudson Valley in a small town, which is starting to grow. Farmers fields are sprouting mansions and drug store chains. Thanks for a wonderful step back into history and for reliving fond memories. You did a great job assembling these pictures and stories.

Comments:	I lived in Syosset beginning in 1953. My father still lives in the area and I visit with him regularly. I went to TV Summers, HB Thompson JHS and graduated Syosset HS in 1968. I was the Syosset Brave my senior year and it was an experience that was one of the highlights of my high school years. I’m still amazed that after almost 40 years of not living in Syosset that it still holds a special place in my memories. The pictures on the website just confirm what a great place it was and is. Since 2008 will be the 40 years anniversary of our graduation from Syosset HS, I’m thinking about trying to put together a reunion for our class. Hung out at the Firehouse a lot, always knew when it was time for lunch or supper when the whistle blew! Riding bikes down 'firehouse hill', like it was mountain sized!! Tony the Good Humor man, snowball fights, playing ball in the streets. Best friends with the twins, Bernadette & Ginny Bataller and Gail Brust (now in Clearwater, FL). We moved to Ga in 1964, but still always came back to good old Syosset. Went to St. Edwards. Anyone heard from Goretta Nendza? Anyone remember ME?!

Comments:	I am having so much fun going through the pictures and comments. Born in Syosset in 1951 and moved into12 Texas Court, off Arizona Ave. Walked to St. Edwards Church every Sunday, in single file, me and my three siblings, followed by our mother. We stopped at the bakery on the way home. Mom worked at IGA as a meat cutter. Loved Pelican pond, I thought I was an Ice Queen! Fell in a few times over thin ice, and walked home with frozen clothes. Used to rent a bicycle built for two from Rent All, and Ann Walton and I would ride all over town, especially to the Bowling Alley on Jericho Turnpike. Anyone know where she is? In 1964 my family moved to Georgia, where we all still live. We do go back to refresh our northern accent and reminisce. I doubt of anyone remembers me, because I've been gone for so long, but if you do, please write. Still in love with Syosset.

Comments:	What a pleasant surprise to stumble upon this website. I also see that my sister, Mary Kelly, also found it. We lived across the street, at 84 Southwoods Road, having moved there from Hicksville. I finished Berry Hill School in 1965, and attended Southwoods Jr. High for 1/2 year before moving to Scranton, PA in 1966. The pictures brought back many fond memories... the parades in Hicksville (my sisters had a Kool-Aid stand at the corner of Old Country Road & Jerusalem Avenue for the 4-H Club during the parades), football games at SHS, dinners at the Viennese Coach, taking out dinner at Christiano's and going to Mass at St. Edward's. Thank you for an enjoyable dose of nostalgia. (I just sent a comment for the Scrapbook....and then continued looking further at your website...came upon the 2006 calendar. The picture for October stopped me cold. If that's a black Ford Galaxie 500 parked in the Town & Country parking lot, may be ours!)

I worked at Austin Drugs for 4 years and I remember one time we thought we saw Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley eating at Christiano's. I remember our High School trip to England with the Chorus, we had the time of our lives. I remember roller-skating at Pine Hollow Rink, Senior cut day at Syosset Woodbury Park. I went to Split Rock and now it is gone. My parents recently sold their home in Syosset to be closer to me and their 3 granddaughters. The people that bought their house basically knocked it down, it is very sad. Things change, but memories of Syosset will always be great!

Sweeny with my parents and sister Jane, having lived at 2936 Jackson Ave., 30 South Oyster Bay Road and 25 Meadow Lane. My parents, Alice and Harry Sweeny, designed and built Lollipop Farm in 1950, and owned and ran that children's zoo until they closed it in 1967 and retired to Pennsylvania. I left Syosset when I married and lived in Bay Shore until 1994 when we retired to Texas. Comments:	Lived in Syosset from 1949 until 1964 at 31 Raynham Drive ... cost $12,000 (wonder what it's worth now?) Started out at Locust Grove with Hilda Brush as my teacher and graduated from SHS in 1964 (with Hilda Brush as an English teacher). Moved to Florida in '64 and attended nursing school in Atlanta. I have fond memories of Syosset, many a birthday at Lollipop Farm, worked as a Candy Striper when Syosset Hospital was built. Before they built the hospital it was Pop's farm, with the freshest produce in town. Drank many a malt at Weintraub's. I remember when the IGA was built and the gas war at Jackson Avenue and Jericho Turnpike (10 cents a gallon) I was in the SHS class of '64 that was in Washington, DC on our Senior trip when Kennedy was assassinated. We were in Williamsburg when we got the terrible news. Bad day. Thanks for the pics and the walk down memory lane. Sometimes I miss the good old days.

Comments:	I have visited your site several times. Although I have no direct links to Syosset, I have many fond memories of Galiza Stables, where I rode often as a child in the 50s. I adored Mr. (Captain) Galiza. He gave me a wonderful foundation for my riding skills. Do you have any more information or pictures of him and his stable? I do remember the fire. Also, I recall riding on an adjoining trail with two other children, who I believe came from a neighboring estate-- Dorr and Torrance Watkins. Are you familiar with such an estate? Torrance became Torrance Fleischmann, an Olympic rider. Any other tidbits you could provide would be most welcome. What a lovely old town it was.

Comments:	Talk about a blast from the past--this site is like getting hit by an atom bomb (remember going under our desks to avoid those things?)! I was a Syossetarian from '49 to '73, when I went on a ski trip to Salt Lake and failed to return. I am saddened to hear of the loss of Pamela Boslet Buskin, who I never knew, but must have crossed paths with several thousand times. What an incredible effort she put into this scrapbook! Did you know that Syosset means "the sound of the wind in the pines"? That's what Judy Chaddick, formerly Vervoort, told me when we met at an Audubon Camp in Wyoming, several years ago. How well I remember sleeping under those pines and hearing that sound, thanks to Troop 280 and the leadership of Frank Tenure. Names familiar to me: Locust Grove (kindergarten and Miss Hickey), St. Dominic (escaped in '65), Syosset-Woodbury Park (lifeguard, '65-'68), 20 Dorcas Ave ('49-70'), 7 Baylis Place ('70-73). This site reminds me of the book Roots, as so many of mine are here. Will hunt for photos, I'm sure I have some.

Comments:	Have been enjoying looking through your scrapbook for quite some time now—so much to see— and have just reached reading some of the remarks sent to your guestbook. When we lived in Syosset (1957 - 1988) we resided on The Spur, a cul-da-sac. Next door to us were two teenage boys and they were very friendly with a fellow by the name of Billy Joel. They were involved in a group called "The Hassles" and drove a van with the name emblazoned on the sides which they parked in the driveway directly opposite our bedroom window. We never really had problem with this situation, the only thing was every now and then we would hear footsteps running through our side and backyard. We later discovered that Billy was seeing a girl (Elizabeth) who resided directly behind our house so this was a convenient shortcut. As you probably know, Elizabeth Weber became Billy's wife. Now we live in Las Vegas, but it seems everywhere we go we hear one of his great songs being piped in over a speaker— not to mention the radio stations we have on. ---- Little did we know at the time..... This is just one of our many fond memories of Syosset.

I have been reading this website for 3 hours now and thoroughly enjoying it! I have seen so many names that have brought back many happy memories from the past! We graduated S.H.S. in ' 71 and our 2 children have also graduated from there, Kevin in 1996 and Meghan in 2002. I have to tell anyone that reads this and remembers Miss Burke from Berry Hill School, that I saw her a few weeks ago after 30 years and I recognized her, she looks great and also remembered me! Comments:	Grew up on PRESTON LANE , the best street in Syosset. Gary O'Grady, Mark Chernow , Robert and Steven La Salle and Rich Serla. Susie Dannenfelser , Marilyn Murray , Mary Ellen Morea. The parents were post war baby boomers who were buying their first houses under the GI bill and had a great deal of fun together raising their babies and seeking the american dream. We used to play in the lots behind Mahjong restaurant and then run into the restaurant to buy a bag of fortune cookies for 25 cents . Used to ride Bikes to the shopping center to the Lady cake bake shop or hang around the parking lot of Peter Yees. Remember the Finast Grocery store? Remember the candy store/diner ? Some days I wish I could just transport back to have one more egg cream there. We all had bicycles and then cars and the best schools and the best opportunity. Syosset is 20 minutes from Oyster bay and 35 minutes from Jones Beach . What could have been better! Went to Syosset High School and graduated in 1974. I live in Philadelphia now and know so many people here who never left after high school, who married their hs sweethearts and whose kids go to the same schools they went to . Wonder what it would have been like to do that .

Comments:	Grew up on Whitman Avenue, Willets School k—1st grade (Miss Hise/Mrs. Galiza and Miss Orleans); St Edwards 2nd-8th (gr '68); Saint Dominic's HS gr 72. One of 13. Mom still lives in the same house, has a law office in town, dad died in December at 89. Remember the Sheehans, the Sprechmans, the Buxtons, corn fields beyond Willets school, "the woods" beyond Melanie Lane, fearing the Levy gang on Halloween night, sledding on the furrowed embankment of the soon-approaching LIE. Played baseball in CYO at all the school fields; altar boy; had a number of Long Island Press paper routes (Dorcas Lane area—even Terry's Bar; Whitman Avenue, Stuart Drive and east toward newly built Seaford-OB Expwy); shooting peas through a peashooter at the tubas at Memorial Day parade; hiking the LIRR tracks in both directions; the paper factory fire; washing dishes at Peter Yee's (alternate shifts with Peter Smith)and more of course. Siblings mostly in NYC area; also Mass., Mich., N.C. Great website, thanks.

My mother-in-law, Isabella Harding (83 years) asked me to try to find any information on a Master Sergeant James McAuliffe. Last known living in Long Island, USA. They met during WW2, whilst he was in the UK and she was serving as a WREN. Within just 3 minutes of my search I came across details of the very gentleman ~ though sadly departed in 1965. I haven't told Isabella yet as I would dearly love to back up this information and answer the many questions that I know she will have. I hope that his family may be able to help me in this. Perhaps Maureen McAuliffe-Smith who provided the photograph of him and the letter sent to his mother. WE WENT TO CENTER ISLAND DURING THE SUMMER. I WORKED FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IN THE AFTERNOONS FOR EILEEN GENTILCORE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF JERICHO. WE MARCHED IN THE MEMORIAL DAY PARADES MANY TIMES. I BOWLED AT SYOSSET LANES AND BELONGED TO THE ANONYMOUS ANGELS TO RAISE FUNDS FOR ST. MARY'S. WE HELD A POOL PARTY THERE EVERY YEAR FOR THE BOYS. I WAS IN THE PTA FOR VILLAGE SCHOOL AND WORKED AT THE FAIR EVERY YEAR. ONE YEAR WE HAD A COUNTRY STORE THEME. COOKIE FREUND WAS THE PRESIDENT AT THE TIME. OUR DEAR FRIENDS WERE THE BONNERS, THE SCHIERS AND THE ERMOLOFF'S. SYOSSET WAS A WONDERFUL TOWN TO RAISE CHILDREN. WE USED TO GO TO THE STATION TO MEET "DAD". THIS IS A WONDERFUL END

(Woodbury Co.1), and remember many things about growing up in the area. My dad’s house dates to 1927. The house next door was a speakeasy back during prohibition. I’ve heard that at one point dad’s place was a brothel. In the 60’s it was used as a hangout for hippies. Anyone ever cut school to go there? HAHA ;-)

Comments:	What a great site! And what a rush or wonderful memories. I spent my childhood in the house on the corner of Berry Hill Rd and Schoolhouse Lane. My dad built the house with his own hands in 1955-6, and raised my brother and I there. We used to feed apples to the horses in Sparks' fields when they came over to the white fence, walked to Split Rock ES every day from K-5 (who else had Mrs. Devine in Kindergarten?) then rode the bus to Southwoods JHS for 6-8. Does anyone else remember Mr. Stengel? Had him in 5th and 6th grade, my first male teacher! Then went to Chaminade HS, graduating in 69. I saw the emails from Mike Sheedy here. I went to elem. school with his brother Tim and lived across School House lane from the Sheedys. What a great time we had playing in that wonderfully big house! Also saw a note here from Karen Katzman -- her dad wrote me a recommendation for my appointment to West Point and her sister Meg was on our JHS bus, as I recall. So many good friends at Split

Comments:	I grew up in Syosset, was SHS class of '81. I now live in Hickory NC and have one son, 20 who is a Corporal in the USMC. Was in Syosset in October, many things have changed and many have not. Was great to see the home town again! Also on a personal note, to friends of my brother Ted Bailey, SHS class of '78: I didn't know how to reach the people that Ted kept in contact with and wanted to let everyone know that Ted passed away on December 18, 2003. He passed away in his sleep as far as we know now, and are still waiting for the autospy results as to what happened. If anyone would like to contact me, I can be emailed at CyndieB1@ aol.com. Again, I hope all his friends will pray for him and know he is now in a better place. Comments:	Hi everybody... so much fun to read through your messages. I am from Syosset- attended Walt Whitman, St Edwards, Our Lady of Mercy and Syosset High- graduated Syosset 1979. Don't remember much of Lollipop Farm- please jog my confused brain..in my memory it changed to Buy Rite. Certainly Wetsons, Carvel and On Parade fill out happy eating memories. If memory serves me, there was also an A and P in nearby Plainview, a WT Grant, A SuperX in Syosset along with a Sweet Shop, Seaosset Aquarium, Dairy Barn and Syosset Shoes. I remember the days when Geico was not there and there was only a big farm (Meyer's Farmstand?) in the area, where we picked out our pumpkins for Halloween. I rode horses at the Woodland Equestrian School on Woodbury road and ate too much candy at Sam's off Woodbury road near Baylis school. Went to Locust Grove, South Grove, Woodbury and finally the new High School. Unfortunately, did not have the opportunity to graduate with the "first" class. Comments: I was born in 1937 and was raised in Syosset.I attended Split Rock school and graduated in 1951 with 12 classmates One was Richard Maltby of Miss Saigan fame and other broadway shows. High school was a choice of Hicksville or Oyster Bay High School. I chose Oyster Bay and graduated in 1955.I have may visions of Syosset,like for instance where many old timers learned to fly at an old country airport on the south side of Jericho Turnpike, now an industrial park.Still see Syosset often since I now live about 22 miles away. Comments:	Hi Gang, We lived in Syosset from 1958 to 1975 on Old Oak Court off of Jackson Avenue and Hillside Lane. Behind the old Syosset Movie Theatre was our backyard, although we had some forest privacy. Very fond memories of Syosset; Lollipop Farm, Carvel, my brother Frank worked at Wetsons Hamburger. What about Rocky's Candy Store and Bob's Bike Shop! Remember them? (near Jericho Turnpike and Jackson Avenue) The Syosset-Woodbury Park, Fox Hollow Inn, Vienese Coach, and so on. I graduated from Syosset High in 1972 and were fond of most of my teachers. My entire family is still going strong thank God. Comments:	Love the scrapbook,found the name of my art teacher at Syosset High, Ms deRosa. We had some great teachers, we were very fortunate. I graduated in 63 and live in Huntington,Syosset has become a little congested and lost some of its charm, but not in my memories.I worked at the Syosset Sweet Shop after school making ice cream sodas and walked there on the railroad tracks every day, also worked at Bohack & IGA in Syosset after school for $1.00 per hr,thats when a hamberger at the Syosset Dinner cost .25 cents and Wetsons on Jericho sold hamgergers for .15 cents.I will always love Syosset and my years at Syosset High. Comments:	i grew up in syosset from birth to 18 years,i remember going to Locust Grove school with Mr. May as my teacher. i also remember lollipop farm and Bahnhoff deli and the great smalltown character. i jioned the navy in 1976 right out of hs.my mom remarried and moved to Commack in 1977, where she and her husband still reside. i returned to my moms after the service and worked a couple of nothing jobs, i decided to go to auto school in troy,ny shortly thereafter. after graduation i accepted a job as machinist at Electric Boat in Groton,CT. i was married in 1983 to someone from centereach, we got a divorce in 2000. i am still at EB and in design now using autocad and catia design systems to make fine weapons for our navy.

Comments:	My sister-in-law, Laurie (Koch) Misiano told me about this website and it was like going back in time. Can't believe all the places and things I'd forgotten. As an educator and parent of three daughters I truly appreciate, now, the wonderful education that Syosset schools provided (graduate 1979.) It was with mixed emotions that I showed my daughters the Syosset I knew as I grew up there (1964-1987). How different it looks today. My parents will be moving after living in Syosset for almost 40 years and relocating to Connecticut to be closer me, my sister Laura ('85) who lives in New Hampshire, my brother Brian and his wife Margaret Sacco ('82) who live in Brewster, NY. My brothers Stephen ('81) and Sean ('96) still remain on Long Island. Syosset will always live in the hearts of all the De Garay family members that called Syosset home for so many years. Comments:	I loved your site.It was great to show the kids the roads we travel, day after day, with horses! They really got a kick out of it. We looked at our house one rainy afternoon during an open house, because my husband used to ride by on his bike,on his way to Split Rock School. We ended up buying it. He also took the school sign the night before they tore down the school. After going thru your site I can see why so many residents are upset that they want to change the name of SHS sports teams from the Braves. WE have a history with it.

I didn't know the old Syosset, but I was there for Lollypop Farm, the post office moving around, the "old library", the destruction of the horse stables and the general modernization of Syosset. I really loved the time I grew up here, skating on Pelican Pond, walking downtown to the sweetshop barefoot, taking the bus to the malls, the parades on Memorial Day, being able to "walk to the movies", etc. I will start looking for anything I can donate to your site.

We lived next to Lolipop Farm, but never set foot in it. I think going over to the sandlot on Hillside Rd and playing 2 on 2 baseball or football was more our style. Went to Village school and remember a wonderful teacher named Mrs. Bloomrosen. Then Southwoods...left in 1973 for florida, next thing you know, I did 22 years in the USCG. Ended up in Ireland, but never forgot about Syosset. Seems like a sweet dream.

My son Gregory attended St Dominics and my daughter Suzanne went to St. Edwards.I was President of Anonymous Angels which supported St Mary's Boys Home.My husband was a member of the Joseph Gorman council 5091 of KC. Those were wonderful days !!!

Comments:	I lived in Syosset for about 18 years and moved to Colorado Springs when I was in the army. I left New York/Syosset back in 1972. However, the rest of my family still lives in Syosset. After reading and looking at your webe page, it sure makes me think back about all of the friends and great food back in that little town. The last time I was back home, was in 1999. Comments:	Great site - I moved to Syosset in '63 and graduated in '69!! What a crazy time that was. I worked at Lafayette all during my high school and college years. We actually had to start forst grade in Hicksville since the school wasn't ready. Went to OLMA and spent every birthday from age 1 to 30's at the Viennese Coach. I remember Lollipop Farm, the Syosset Theatre and Wetson's. Great site!

Comments:	I was born in 1937 and was raised in Syosset.I attended Split Rock school and graduated in 1951 with 12 classmates One was Richard Maltby of Miss Saigan fame and other broadway shows. High school was a choice of Hicksville or Oyster Bay High School. I chose Oyster Bay and graduated in 1955.I have may visions of Syosset,like for instance where many old timers learned to fly at an old country airport on the south side of Jericho Turnpike, now an industrial park.Still see Syosset often since I now live about 22 miles away.
